My grandpa was blind in his twilight years and my dog, Haley, was trained as an assistance dog, so I know firsthand how important — and extraordinary — these canine superheroes are.

Guide Dogs for the Blind was started in 1942 to help World War II veterans coming home without their sight. The organization’s founders believed that dogs could serve as their trusted guides. Since then, more than 10,000 teams have graduated from their school.
