Meals on Wheels for Pets

Idea: Help Feed Pets of the Elderly

In 2011, there were nearly 9 million seniors facing hunger. The Meals On Wheels Association of America has 5,000 local senior nutrition programs providing one million meals per day.  And many of these needy seniors have pets.

When a Meals on Wheels San Diego volunteer noticed that one of her clients was sharing her food with her cats, the AniMeals program was born to provide pet food to homebound seniors and disabled in the Southern California area.

Today, the nonprofit provides food for almost 250 pets per week, delivering approximately 3,000 pounds of pet food per month, keeping seniors and their pets together.

But they need food and supplies.

AniMeals needs donations of:

  • All brands of dry and canned cat and dog food – unopened, unexpired and non-prescription
  • Ziploc Freezer quart and gallon bags for packing food

Drop-off or send donations to:
The Helen Woodward Animal Center
6461 El Apajo Road
Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067

The organization also accepts donations at some Petco and Vons locations. Call Wendy, the program supervisor, at 858.756.4117 x341 or send her an email.

You can also make a donation, give someone a gift of support or send them an item on their wish list.
